We have several feeders available as well as a few that would make excellent breeding stock for someone interested in adding AGH to their farm.
We aim to raise happy hogs naturally and we highly recommend them to anyone who is interested in growing their own healthy food, loves to cook, and to foodies who are interested in trying gourmet pork.
Even if you are new to raising your own pigs, AGH, the original homestead hogs, are perfect for beginners because they are smaller and more gentle than many other hog breeds and are great for children to work with too. They do best on pasture as they like to graze and when there is plenty to eat they will not root as much, keeping your pastures healthy. If you plan to raise and butcher your own hogs on the homestead, AGH are much more manageable due to their smaller size.
More about AGH: they are slower growing lard hogs that provide some of the best pork you will ever eat and plenty of lard to cook and bake with. By raising AGH you are helping with conservation efforts as they are still considered threatened by the livestock conservancy. They gain weight easily on small amounts of grain with good pasture, extra produce from the garden and kitchen scraps. They are fairly easy to keep in and are respectful of their fences as long as they have lush pastures with plenty to eat and space to roam. They absolutely love grass and other vegetation and will graze in their fields all day. Ours also clean up wild blackberry plants and ragweed, so they are great little workers! Section off your garden space, add the hogs and they will till it up for you in no time! AGH are tough, only require simple shelters, and will do fine on pasture over winter. They are extremely calm, friendly, and easy to handle. If you accidentally leave a gate open.. they do not like to stray very far and will follow you back when you call them and/or shake the feed bucket! They also love belly rubs🙂
All of our hogs are raised where they have plenty of options: they can run and play, sleep in their cozy shelters, feast on a variety of plants, bugs, and small critters, lounge in their wallows or under trees in the shade, and root as much as they desire. They receive leftover produce from the garden and love squash, carrots and tomatoes best, as well as extra/broken/dirty eggs from the chickens. They will also eat the weeds you pull from the garden!
Beginning price for our hogs is $100, depending on if you would like feeders or breeders (or hogs ready to butcher). If you are purchasing feeders, we do require all buyers purchase at least 2 hogs as they are herd animals and need friends. Our piglets come from breeding stock that are registered with the American Guinea Hog Association. We love to help folks learn about these wonderful animals and help them get started, so don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!
